28mm vs. 32mm Miniatures: How to Choose Your Scale

Choose the scale that matches the models already on your table. If you are starting a collection, compare the sculpt's actual height and base footprint before choosing. A 32mm label does not mean every creature stands exactly 32mm tall, and base diameter is a separate measurement.

What does miniature scale mean?

Terms such as 28mm and 32mm describe a model range or intended proportions. Designers may measure a human figure to the eyes or to the top of the head, and poses, helmets, and scenic bases affect the final height. A dwarf, human, and dragon from the same range should not all be the same height.

How much larger is 32mm than 28mm?

If the same sculpt is uniformly resized from 28mm to 32mm, its linear dimensions increase by about 14.3%. That comparison applies to a true rescale of the same file, not to unrelated models carrying those labels. Different sculptors may use different proportions.

Which size works for a tabletop RPG?

Start with your existing party, battle map, and terrain. Compare how much space the miniature's base occupies and whether weapons or scenic details extend beyond it. For a one-inch grid, a base close to 25mm occupies roughly one square; the figure may still overhang. Larger creatures may intentionally take several squares. Check your game and group’s expectations.

Which size works for a fantasy army?

Match the unit's existing scale, base dimensions, and rank spacing. Spears, shields, and wide poses can collide when figures stand in tight formation. For a mixed-designer army, request actual dimensions before committing to a large unit.
